In a world whispering of ease, Daniel Denton, guided by his father’s maxim, “Work is good,” forged a path of valor at sixteen, launching his first venture with a heart unbound by fear. Inspired by Yvon Chouinard’s creed, “Fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all,” he embraced the uncharted, earning his private pilot’s license at seventeen. Soaring above Montana’s peaks, he found freedom in the skies, a solitary quest that ignited an addiction to bold horizons.
It was through hearing stories of his family’s upbringing, rooted in the rugged mountains of Marble, Colorado, that Daniel learned resilience and honor, virtues that ground Smooth Stone Landscaping. Amid the achievements and pursuits of his business, he counts his greatest accomplishment as marrying his wife, Averie.
Each project reflects his reverence for nature’s canvas, shaped by travels through Iceland’s fjords, India’s vibrant streets, Nepal’s ancient paths, and New Zealand’s enchanting Milford Sound and majestic Matterhorn of the South, where beauty’s diversity spoke to his creative soul. Inspired by nature’s power to ground the spirit in a fast-paced world, Daniel creates spaces that draw people from distractions, awakening wonder, hope, and connection through earth’s quiet beauty.
Ashley Denton is an owner and visionary behind Smooth Stone Landscaping, bringing a deep passion for creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces to every project in the Bozeman area. He holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) from the University of Arizona, where he won a certificate of merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for excellence in the study of Landscape Architecture and won the Raymond E. Page Scholarship Award from the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) for demonstration of excellence through academic achievement and scholarly endeavor in the discipline of Landscape Architecture. Receiving his BLA in 1993, he developed a strong foundation in design principles that blend natural beauty with practical living environments.
With extensive international experience in leadership development and outdoor leadership, Ashley has led wilderness trips and ministry initiatives across more than 65 countries. He shares his expertise through his blog at outdoorleaders.com, where he explores outdoor leadership, wilderness ministry, and adventure-based growth through experiential learning. Growing up in the mountains near Aspen, CO, Ashley draws constant inspiration from the landscapes that shaped him. In his free time, he enjoys family moments, skiing, backpacking, fly fishing, and gathering friends. His love for the mountains informs every landscape he helps design and build.
Ladan is a fifth-generation Montanan whose roots date back to the late 1800s, when his family first settled on the ranch outside Gardiner. In his early years, he spent much of his time there and in the surrounding mountains, building a lasting appreciation for Montana’s wide-open spaces and rugged beauty. Whether hunting, fishing, backpacking, or lending a hand, he discovered the depth of creation and the traditions his family has carried for generations.
A proud Montana State Bobcat, Ladan played basketball for the Cats while earning his bachelor’s degree in business marketing. Before stepping into landscape construction, he worked in marketing at Stockman Bank, where he gained experience managing sponsorships and creative projects while building strong communication and organizational skills. Today, alongside his work with Smooth Stone, he continues to guide elk hunts with the family’s outfit—an opportunity that allows him to meet people from all over, help them fulfill a lifelong dream, and grow as a leader in the field.
When he’s not on a job site, you’ll find him cruising the hills, tinkering with engines, woodworking, or spending time with friends and family. He is also active in his church, where he enjoys staying connected and contributing to the life of the community.
Hampton graduated with a B.S. degree in Geology from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1996. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona in 2007, he worked for landscape architecture firms in Tucson, Arizona, and Bozeman, Montana for nine years and six years, respectively. His work included park design and planning, hospital and school campus design, subdivision master planning, residential and multi-family landscapes, hotels, and streetscape design. Hampton enjoys spending time with his family camping, skiing, and climbing. Hampton started his own practice, Verdant LLC, in 2022 and began partnering with Smooth Stone Landscaping in 2025.
